Frank Frazetta inked this anti-smoking campaign with a surfer twist that used to run in the back of the Warren magazines in 1974. Known for his campy and sexy comic book illustrations, Frank managed to get a curvy comic book siren in this ad to illustrate the point of smoking versus surfing … plus a girl in hand!
Now dated, and considered a classic component of his portfolio, this 70s advertisement was targeted to the outdoors teenage market to discourage them from smoking and to buy surfboards instead.
Although the main part of his comics output was limited to the 1940s and 1950s, Frank Frazetta’s dynamic and realistic style was of influence for several new generations of comics artists. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Frazzetta (he later dropped one of the z’s) made his earliest comics during his childhood, which he sold to his friends.
