An Edge Over Other Surfers

Every surfer dreams of having that edge over other surfers, whether its a wicked-bad bottom turn that makes all the Bettys swoon, a longer noseride time trimming effortlessly down the line, or even a killer drop-knee turn on those long, rolling waves that recall the style and grace of endless summers gone by. Ah yes, from the youngest of groms to the saltiest of old sea dogs, surfers from all over the world dream of being just bit stronger, a smidge faster, a dash more stylish, or just flat out better than anyone at the line up!

But it is the twenty first century after all, and as it goes, we as surfers also look for that particular edge wherever we can find it. Yes, even in modern day technology; lighter fins are stuck on the bottom of your shortboards that shoot them down the line like so much rocket fuel burning up on launch, more buoyant materials are sandwiched inside your stick that floats better and rips harder. All sorts of doodads and doohickeys are coming out of the surf marketing machine that you don’t know which latest and greatest gadget just might capture the imagination of the next surfing generation, or which product is just plain crap.

However, every once in a great while … once in a clear blue moon … someone, something, emerges from the pile of surf hoopla that has been heaped on so thick and heavy, that it totally restores our faith back in those that truly understand the surfer inside each and everyone of us. Something that not only makes sense in today’s approach to surfing , but also parallels the true spirit of surfing, and echoes just a tiny bit of the soul that the sport of kings once proudly possessed.

So what, and where, is that surf-gift from the gods? We may know … but you’ll have to wait!
